Valerii Popkov

Popkov, Valerii Ivanovich

Born Jan. 21 (Feb. 3), 1908. Soviet electrical engineer. Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966; corresponding member, 1953). Member of the CPSU since 1951.

In 1930, Popkov graduated from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute. He worked in industry and various scientific research institutions, including the All-Union Institute of Electrical Engineering. In 1943 he began working at the G. M. Krzhizhanovskii Institute of Power Engineering. Popkov’s principal works are devoted to high-voltage engineering, electrical discharge in gases at high tension, physical processes occurring when materials interact with strong electric fields, and longdistance power transmission. Popkov has been awarded the P. N. Iablochkov Prize, the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
