Academy Bay

 

a bay of the Sea of Okhotsk on the eastern shore of Asia. It is 110 km long and 61 km wide, and its depth varies from 20 to 45 m. The rocky shores consist of pebbles and patches of sand. The bay freezes in the winter. In its upper reaches it branches into the Konstantin, Ul’ba, and Nikolai bays. The Academy Bay was named in honor of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences by the Russian explorer A. F. Middendorf during the 1844–45 expedition.
