pink slime A popular term for an inexpensive, low-quality meat filler, which comprises up to 70% of ground beef sold in the US.
Pink slime is produced by taking low-grade trimmings—i.e., from the parts of the cow most susceptible to contamination, often close to the hide which is exposed to foecal matter—from the meat production line that would otherwise be wasted and disinfecting them with ammonia, producing a pinkish meat “slime” used to supplement inexpensive ground beef. |
