Shumway, Norman

Shumway, Norman (Edward)

(1923– ) surgeon; born in Kalamazoo, Mich. A heart surgeon on the faculty of the Stanford University School of Medicine (1958), he pioneered research on heart transplantation, and then moved on to heart-lung transplants by 1981. An author of more than 450 publications on the heart, he was honored worldwide for his work.
