Shuster Mission
Shuster Mission
an American financial mission in Iran from May 1911 to January 1912. The mission was headed by M. Shuster, an official of the American colonial administration in Cuba from 1899 to 1901 and in the Philippines from 1906 to 1909. Shuster, whom the Iranian Majlis had named financial adviser and treasurer general in June 1911, tried to use his broad powers to draw Iran into the orbit of American imperialism. His activities displeased the imperialist rivals of the USA in Iran. After the tsarist government issued an ultimatum on Nov. 29, 1911, that was supported by Great Britain, Shuster was dismissed; he left for the USA in January 1912.
