an island in the northwestern part of the Severnaia Zemlia archipelago, in Krasnoiarsk Krai, RSFSR. Pioner Island is about 1,550 sq km in area, with elevations to 382 m. It has a rocky coast. An ice cap occupies the island’s eastern, higher part.

Founded in 1924, Pioner is published in Moscow. Its contributors have included N. K. Krupskaia, M. I. Kalinin, and Em. Iaroslavskii and the writers S. Ia. Marshak, A. P. Gaidar, L. A. Kassil’, B. S. Zhitkov, K. G. Paustovskii, R. I. Fraerman, V. A. Kaverin, A. L. Barto, and S. V. Mikhalkov. As of 1975, the journal’s contributors included Z. I. Voskresenskaia, M. P. Prilezhaeva, Iu. Ia. Iakovlev, and A. G. Aleksin. The artists O. G. Vereiskii, L. V. Vladimirskii, A. M. Kanevskii, F. V. Lemkul’, P. I. Kuz’michev, and E. A. Medvedev also work on the journal. Pioner has sections devoted to school and Pioneer life, public affairs, science and technology, art, sports, and children’s creative activities. The journal organizes the activities of the Timur teams and detachments. It has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1974). Circulation, more than 1.5 million (1975).
