Sovetskii Khudozhnik

(Soviet Artist), the publishing house of the Artists’ Union of the USSR. The Sovetskii Khudo-zhnik Publishing House was founded in Moscow in 1969 as a result of the reorganization of a publishing house of the same name that was founded in 1946 by the organizational committee of the Union of Soviet Artists; since 1964 it has been under the jurisdiction of the Committee on the Press of the Council of Ministers of the USSR.

Sovetskii Khudozhnik publishes albums, art reproductions, postcards, and art books, as well as catalogs, pamphlets, and posters for art exhibits. For the most part its publications consist of albums devoted to the arts of the Union republics, illustrated monographs on contemporary artists (for example, the series The Masters of Our Age), and collections of theoretical articles on Soviet art. More than 1,200 titles are published annually, with a total press run of more than 44 million copies (27 million printer’s sheets).
