Artillery Counterpreparation

Artillery Counterpreparation

an artillery strike in defense against an enemy attack which is already prepared or which is being set up; its purpose is to foil his attack or to weaken the force of the initial assault.

Artillery counterpreparation was first used during World War I (1914–18). During the Great Patriotic War (1941–45), artillery counterpreparation was conducted by the Soviet Army on a much larger scale and in cooperation with air force counterpreparation. A striking example was the artillery counterpreparation which was carried on in the zone of the Central Front on July 5, 1943, during the Battle of Kursk. At the present time artillery counterpreparation is a component of counterpreparation.
