Unified Modeling Language (language)(UML) A non-proprietary, third generation modelling language. The Unified Modeling Language is an open methodused to specify, visualise, construct and document theartifacts of an object-oriented software-intensive systemunder development. The UML represents a compilation of "bestengineering practices" which have proven successful inmodelling large, complex systems.
UML succeeds the concepts of Booch, OMT and OOSE byfusing them into a single, common and widely usable modellinglanguage. UML aims to be a standard modelling language whichcan model concurrent and distributed systems.
UML is not an industry standard, but is taking shape underthe auspices of the Object Management Group (OMG). OMG hascalled for information on object-oriented methodologies, thatmight create a rigorous software modelling language. Manyindustry leaders have responded in earnest to help create thestandard.
