Stoianov, Nikolai Andreev

 

Born Nov. 9,1883, in Grodno; died Oct. 9, 1968, in Sofia. Bulgarian botanist. Academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1938). Member of the Communist Party of Bulgaria from 1946.

In 1911, Stoianov graduated from the University of Sofia; he was a professor at the university from 1926 to 1951. He served as director of the Botanical Institute from 1951 to 1962, academic secretary of the Division of Biology and Medical Sciences from 1951 to 1956, and chief scientific secretary of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 1956 to 1959. Stoianov’s research was devoted to the taxonomy of higher plants, the botanical geography of Bulgaria and contiguous countries, and the history of vegetation in the Balkan Peninsula. He was awarded the Order of Georgii Dimitrov and the Dimitrov Prize (1950).
