Soviet-Icelandic Agreements

Diplomatic relations between the USSR and Iceland were established, in stages, on July 27, Sept. 21, and Oct. 4, 1943. (Previously, relations had been maintained through Denmark from June 22–24,1926.)

The two countries concluded agreements on trade (May 25, 1927) and on trade and payments (Aug. 1, 1953). Through an exchange of notes, the countries concluded agreements on sending diplomatic mail unaccompanied by couriers (Feb. 28-Mar. 13, 1958) and on mutual abolition of consular fees and charges (Mar. 14, 1961). Also concluded was an agreement on cultural, scientific, and technical cooperation (Apr. 25, 1961) and a trade protocol (Nov. 2, 1972).

A program of cultural and scientific cooperation was agreed to on Apr. 6, 1973. A joint communique of Apr. 9, 1975, stated that Soviet-Icelandic relations are mutually advantageous and contribute to the strengthening of peace and security in Europe.
