Soviet-Tanzanian Agreements

Diplomatic relations were established on Dec. 10–11, 1961, between the USSR and Tanganyika (renamed the United Republic of Tanzania on Apr. 26, 1964, after the union with Zanzibar).

The two countries concluded agreements on trade (Aug. 14, 1963) and on cultural cooperation (Nov. 6, 1963). On May 26, 1966, the parties concluded an agreement on economic and technical cooperation, under which the USSR granted assistance in the construction, assembly, and operation of a number of facilities in Tanzania and in the training of national cadres. The USSR also extended a long-term credit to Tanzania on favorable terms.

A joint communique of Oct. 13, 1969, noted the mutual desire of the countries to expand relations.
