Soviet-Tunisian Agreements

Diplomatic relations were established between the USSR and Tunisia on July 11, 1956. On July 13, 1957, the two countries concluded an agreement on trade, and on Aug. 30, 1961, they signed an agreement on economic and technical cooperation, whereby the USSR extended long-term credit to Tunisia on favorable terms, assisted in the construction of hydroengineering installations on the Kassebi River, and provided aid for the construction and equipping of the National Technical Institute at the University of Tunis.

In addition, the countries concluded agreements on long-term trade (Mar. 14, 1962), on payments (Mar. 14, 1962), on cultural cooperation (Dec. 12, 1963), on air transportation (Mar. 12, 1964), on the granting to Tunisia of commercial credit for the payment of goods delivered by the USSR during the period 1965–67 (protocol, Nov. 21, 1964), and on cooperation in radio and television broadcasting (Mar. 6, 1967).

In a joint communique of Apr. 25, 1973, the countries expressed their desire to strengthen their friendship and to develop mutually beneficial multilateral cooperation. An agreement on cultural and scientific cooperation for 1975–76 was signed in May 1975.
