PipridaePipridae[′pip·rə‚dē]Pipridae(manakins), a family of birds of the order Passeriformes. The body length measures 8.5-16 cm, and the weight 9-34 g. The wings and tail are short. The plumage of the males is black with yellow, red, white, and, more rarely, blue; the plumage of the females is greenish. The family comprises 61 species, which are distributed in the tropical forests of Central and South America. In courting, the males utter mating calls singly, in pairs, or in groups of five to ten (sometimes up to 70) individuals on ground clearings or on branches. Only the females build nests, incubate the eggs (two per clutch), and feed the young. The Pipridae feed on berries, small fruits, and insects. Pipridae
