Siachen
the largest glacier of the Karakoram Mountains. It is 75 km long and covers an area of 1,180 sq km. The Siachen, which forms the source of the Shaiok River (Indus River basin), is a trunk glacier with numerous tributaries. It advanced in the period between 1848, the year the glacier was discovered, and 1909, and again in the 1950’s.
