a city and administrative center of Piriatin Raion, Poltava Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Situated on the Udai River (Dnieper River basin). Railroad station on the Bakhmach-Grebenka line; highway junction. Population, 17,200 (1974). Piriatin has a furniture factory, a cheese plant, a vegetable-drying plant, and a brickyard. It also has a meat-packing plant. First mentioned in the chronicles of 1155, Piriatin became a district capital in 1781.
