PiroguePiroguea boat of the Carib Indians consisting of a narrow wooden frame covered on the outside by tree bark, which was sewn together with roots and tarred at the seams. Some pirogues were covered with skins instead of bark. The name “pirogue” was used by Europeans to designate similar boats of other peoples, including the woodland Indians of North America. Dugouts burned or hollowed out of a single log, sometimes a tree trunk, are also called pirogues. pirogue
