Location:Western North Carolina. Accessible by US 19, 23, 64, 276, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Nearby cities/towns include Brevard, Canton, and Waynesville.

Special Features:The Cradle of Forestry in America, an outdoor museum on former grounds of George Washington Vanderbilt's estate, which depicts the history of forest conservation and honors leaders in its development; Looking Glass Falls, an unbroken rush of whitewater 30 feet wide and 60 feet high; Appalachian National Scenic Trail (see entry in national trails section); Roan Mountain Gardens, with spring displays of purple rhododendron; Shining Rock Wilderness, named for a rock outcrop filled with quartz deposits.
