Ugra
an urban-type settlement and administrative center of Ugra Raion, Smolensk Oblast, RSFSR. Ugra is situated on the Ugra River, 240 km east of the city of Smolensk. The settlement has a railroad station on the Viaz’ma-Briansk line. Ugra has a logging and timber distribution establishment, a woodworking factory, andacheeseplant.
Ugra
a river in Smolensk and Kaluga oblasts, RSFSR; a left tributary of the Oka River of the Volga River basin. The Ugra, which rises in the Smolensk Upland, is 399 km long and drains an area of 15,700 sq km. It is fed mainly by snow. The high-water period lasts from the end of March through May. The mean flow rate 35 km from the mouth is about 90 cu m per sec. The Ugra freezes between November and early January and opens up at the end of March or in April. The river is used for floating timber. The city of Iukhnov is situated on the Ugra. Cruises along the river are popular.
