The constellation of symptoms related to generalised mucosal drying, which is most often associated with Sjögren syndrome but may occur in amyloidosis, haemochromatosis, hyperlipoproteinaemia types IV and V, sarcoidosis, vitamin C and/or A deficiency, scleroderma, and other connective tissue diseases.
Targeted tissues
• Eyes—xeroconjunctivitis due to decreased tears; thick, “ropy” secretions on the inner canthus; foreign body (tired, itchy, sandy) sensation; and decreased visual acuity.
• Mouth—xerostomia with decreased salivation due to lymphocyte infiltration and duct obstruction, with soreness, adhesion of food to mucosa, “dry cracker” sign, angular cheilitis, fissuring of the tongue, and acceleration of caries.
