binding protein

A generic term for a protein that reversibly binds to various small molecules, including amino acids, sugars, inorganic ions, vitamins and other molecules.

binding protein

A protein that is linked to another chemical in the body, either transporting it through the blood or helping to convey it into cells across cell membranes. Examples of binding proteins include ceruloplasmin, sex hormone-binding globulin, and transcobalamin, which carries vitamin B12. See also: protein
