borough and unitary authority (1991 pop. 127,348), S central England. Swindon was a small village until 1841, when the Great Western RR opened its locomotive and car works there. It became the largest and most highly industrialized town in the Wiltshire, and is the center of the modern borough. Products include machinery and equipment, clothing, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and computers; other industries include financial services. The borough includes Stratton and St. Margaret.
