A descriptive term for the curved bacteria, Tropheryma whippeli, seen by high-power light microscopy of Whipple’s disease macrophages. Sickle particles are ubiquitous and may be found in the myocardium, lungs, spleen, liver, pancreas, mesentery, retroperitoneum, soft tissue, lymph nodes, adrenal glands and brain.
