a city in southern Rumania; capital of Argeş District. Population, 74,200 (1970; 110,000 including suburbs). The city is a transportation junction. It has plants that manufacture motor vehicles and electric motors, as well as a wood-products combine, an oil refinery, and a combine that produces petrochemicals. Other enterprises include a packinghouse, a milk plant, a wine and spirits distillery, and a garment factory. The city also has enterprises that produce leather, shoes, textiles, rubber, and building materials.
