Restoration and Documentation
Restoration and Documentation
(in Russian, rekonstruktsiia), the re-creation of the original appearance of a destroyed region, an architectural ensemble, an individual structure, a sculpture, or a work of applied art. The object may be actually re-created (restored), or it may be re-created in the form of a written description, a drawing, or a model. Restoration and documentation are based on the study of those parts of a building left intact, fragments of the original objects, written records, depictions of the original objects, and measurements. The scholarly documentation of a monument may subsequently serve as the basis of the monument’s restoration.
