[tran′zish·ən ‚rē·jən] (astronomy) A layer of the solar atmosphere only a few hundred miles thick between the chromosphere and the corona across which the temperature rises rapidly from a few times 104K to the order of 106K. (solid-state physics) The region between two homogeneous semiconductors in which the impurity concentration changes.
