Pitiusas Islands

(Islas Pitiusas), a group of islands in the western Mediterranean, in the Balearic Islands. Administered as part of the Spanish province of Baleares. Area, 760 sq km. Population, 48,000 (1970). The largest of the islands is Ibiza. The topography is hilly, with elevations to 475 m. The islands are composed chiefly of limestones and marls, with karst formations and Mediterranean landscapes. The population engages in subtropical farming and in fishing and salt extraction. The city of Ibiza is located on one of the islands.
