Pitman rod Pitman rodConnecting rod used to convert from rotation to reciprocating motion. A Pitman rod was used, for example, on a mowing machine to drive the reciprocating sickle bar. They were generally made of wood so that if there were a jam, the wood (easily replaceable) would break before any of the other machinery was bent or broken.
