[ri′strik·təd ′er·ē·ə] (navigation) An airspace of defined dimensions identified by an area on the surface of the earth within which the flight of aircraft is subject to restrictions. An area within which vessels may be navigated subject to prohibitions with respect to anchoring, trawling, fishing, and so on.

Penetration of restricted areas without authorization from the using or controlling agency may be extremely hazardous to the aircraft and its occupants. Aircraft may not fly in a restricted area, the particulars of which have duly published, except in accordance with the conditions of the restrictions or by permission of the state over whose territory the areas are established. Restricted airspace is depicted on the en route charts as shown in the illustration.
