Trumbić, Ante

Born May 17, 1864, in Split; died Nov. 17, 1938, in Zagreb. Croatian and Yugoslav political figure. Doctor of law (1890).

Trumbić studied at the Universities of Zagreb, Vienna, and Graz. In 1894 he became a member of the Croatian (Dalmatian) Party of Law. From 1895 to 1918 he was a deputy to the Dalmatian Diet and the Austrian Parliament. He was the founder of the liberal-bourgeois Croatian Party (1905), which advocated the rapprochement of the Croats and Serbs. In 1915, Trumbic was chairman of the Yugoslav Committee in London, on behalf of which in July 1917 he signed the Declaration of Corfu on the creation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. From 1918 to 1920 he was foreign minister of the kingdom; he participated in the Paris Peace Conference of 1919–20. In 1920 and 1924 he was elected a deputy to the Skupština. In his later years Trumbic withdrew from political life.
