Vladimir Adamovich Korol

Born Dec. 14 (27), 1912, in the city of Igumen, present-day Cherven’, in Minsk Oblast. Soviet architect. People’s Architect of the USSR (1970). Became a member of the CPSU in 1940.

From 1934 to 1941, KoroP studied at the Leningrad Academy of Arts. He has worked in the Byelorussian SSR, primarily in Minsk, since 1945; in 1955 he became the chairman of the State Committee of the Council of Ministers of the Byelorussian SSR for Affairs of Construction and Architecture. Korol’ has been an instructor at the Byelorussian Polytechnic Institute since 1947. His works in Minsk, which were designed in collaboration with others, include the city’s general plan (1948-69), Lenin Prospect (1950’s; State Prize of the Byelorussian SSR, 1968), Central Square (1948-55), the Main Post Office (1950-53), the Central Telegraph Office (1954-56), and the monument at Victory Square (1954). Korol’ also participated in the design of the memorial complex Brest Hero-Fortress (1966-71). He directed the design of a number of plans for raions and for many villages in the Byelorussian SSR. Korol’ was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, two other orders, and various medals.
