Vladimir Andreevich Staritskii

Born 1533; died 1569. One of the last Russian appanage princes. A cousin of Ivan IV.

After a revolt led by his father, Andrei Ivanovich, in 1537, Vladimir Andreevich spent three years in prison. Later he was reconciled to Ivan IV and participated in military campaigns and in the administration of the government. In 1553, when the tsar was seriously ill, a group of boyars and clergy intended to make Vladimir Andreevich the tsar in the event of Ivan IV’s death. This led to the disgrace of Vladimir Andreevich in 1563, and his mother was sent to a convent. In October 1569 he was executed with his wife and younger children; his mother was executed at the same time.
