Vladimir Atlantov

Atlantov, Vladimir Andreevich

Born Feb. 19, 1939, in Leningrad. Soviet Russian lyric-dramatic tenor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1966.

In 1963, Atlantov graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory, where he had studied singing under N. D. Bolotina. In the same year he became a soloist with the Leningrad Theater of Opera and Ballet. He underwent further training at the La Scala Theater in Milan, Italy, from 1963 to 1965. In 1967 he joined the Bolshoi Theater as a soloist. Atlantov’s roles have included German and Vodemon in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades and lolanta, respectively, the title role in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sadko, Don José in Bizet’s Carmen, and Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca. He has also sung the title roles in Verdi’s Don Carlo and Otello and in Prokofiev’s Semen Kotko.

Atlantov won second prize at the M. I. Glinka All-Union Vocalists’ Competition in Moscow in 1962, first prize at the P. I. Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in 1966, and first prize at the International Young Opera Singers’ Competition in Sofia in 1967. He has made concert tours abroad. Atlantov has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
