Świnoujście
(shfēnôo͞o`ēshchĕ), Ger. Swinemünde, town (1993 est. pop. 46,300), Zachodniopomorskie prov., NW Poland, on the island of Usedom, at the mouth of the Świna River. It is the outer port for Szczecin and a fishing center and seaside resort. The first mention of the town dates from 1181. In 1765, the town became part of the Prussian province of Pomerania; it passed to Poland in 1945. During World War II the town was a German naval base.Świnoujście

Population, 41,000 (1974). Świnoujście is one of Poland’s major centers for coal export and fishing. Ferries carry trains and motor vehicles between Świnoujście and Ystad, Sweden. The city has a ship-repair yard and a fish cannery. Świnoujście is a noted seaside resort.
