Vladimir Dmitrievich Zhurin

Born Apr. 22 (May 4), 1891, in the city of Tetiushi; died Aug. 19, 1962, in Moscow. Soviet hydraulic engineer; professor (1928), doctor of technical sciences (1944). Became a member of the CPSU in 1928. After graduating from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1918, he completed several important projects, designing irrigation systems and hydraulic-engineering structures for the region of the Golodnaia Step’.

Zhurin’s main works are in hydraulic engineering. He took part in the development of GOELRO (State Commission for the Electrification of Russia). The Scientific Research Institute on Problems of Water Management of Middle Asia (now the V. D. Zhurin Institute for the Study of Water Management and Hydraulic Engineering of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR) was organized in Tashkent on Zhurin’s initiative. Zhurin was one of the engineering directors for the construction of the White Sea-Baltic Waterway and the Moscow Canal. He also drew up the plans and supervised the construction of the Uglich and Rybinsk hydroelectric power plants. In 1946 he became the head of the subdepartment of hydraulics and hydromechanization at the V. V. Kuibyshev Moscow Construction Engineering Institute. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and three other orders, as well as medals.
