On the southeastern border of MN, north of Rochester; original county; established Oct 27, 1849 (prior to statehood); originally spelled Wabashaw. Name Origin: The name of hereditary Sioux chiefs. The name of the chiefs has been transliterated as Wapashaw and is said to mean 'red leaf,' 'red hat,' or 'red battle-standard.' The origin of the latter is probably a decoration or red uniform given by the British to one of the chiefs.
