a city in northwestern Algeria, in the wilaya (department) of Oran. Population, 91,000 (1968). Sidi Bel Abbes has a railroad station and is the trade and industrial center of an agricultural region that grows grains, grapes, and olives. There is a food-processing industry (flour, vegetable oil) and a leather and footwear industry, which includes a large shoe factory. As of 1975, construction was under way on a milk plant and a plant for agricultural machinery and equipment.
