Sidorov, Aleksei Alekseevich

 

Born June 1 (13), 1891, in the village of Nikolaevka, Kursk Province, now Sumy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR; died June 30, 1978, in Moscow. Soviet art historian, specialist in book science, and bibliophile. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946). Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1947).

Sidorov studied at Moscow University from 1909 to 1913. He taught at Moscow State University from 1916 to 1931 and from 1942 to 1950, becoming a professor there in 1925. He also taught at the Moscow Printing Institute between 1938 and 1964. He worked at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts from 1916 to 1921 and from 1927 to 1936.

Sidorov’s works, encompassing many topics in the field of culture and art, deal mainly with drawing, book illustration, and book science. He donated to the state his large collection of graphic works by Russian and foreign artists. Sidorov was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and several medals.
