Established: Authorized on January 8, 1971; established on April 8, 1975. Location:In northern Minnesota, near the US/Canadian border, 15 miles east of International Falls and 300 miles north of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. Voyageurs is a water-based park (nearly one-third of the park is water). Access to the Kabetogama peninsula, the islands, and nearly all of the park's shoreline is by watercraft. Facilities:Campgrounds, picnic area, rest rooms (é), lodging, groceries, restaurant/snacks, boat rental, boat ramp, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Activities:Camping, hiking, swimming, boating, kayaking, fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, wildlife viewing, interpretive programs. Special Features:This waterway of four large lakes connected by narrows was once the route of the French-Canadian voyageurs who paddled birch barkcanoes full of animal pelts and trade goods on theirway to Lake Athabaska in Canada.
