A runway length design concept in which the length of a prepared runway is such that the accelerate-stop distance (the runway length required for an aircraft to accelerate to a specified speed, and then, in the case of an engine failure, to be able to stop safely on the runway) is equal to the takeoff distance for the aircraft for which the runway is designed. Also called the balanced field length.
