A nipple pulled inward by an underlying tumour or inflammation which, in the case of breast CA, may be accompanied by a peau d’orange appearance of the surrounding skin. Retracted nipples may also be red, ulcerated, have a scaly surface and histologically demonstrate Paget’s disease of the breast

retracted nipple

A nipple whose tip is pulled inward or folded on itself. It differs from an inverted nipple in that it will not come out when stimulated. Causes include aging, ductal ectasia, or breast cancer. Any change in nipple position, esp. if accompanied by discharge or change in surrounding skin, should be reported to a health care provider. Synonym: crater nippleSee also: nipple
