Scharoun, Hans Bernhard

Born Sept. 20, 1893, in Bremen; died Nov. 25, 1972, in West Berlin. German architect (West Berlin).

From 1926 to 1932, Scharoun studied in the Academy of Arts in Breslau (present-day Wroclaw, Poland). He developed the traditions of expressionism, creating asymmetrical, often curvilinear, compositions and juxtaposing elements of geometrical rationalism with organic form. His works include the philharmonic hall in West Berlin (1956–63) and the “Romeo and Juliet” apartments in Stuttgart (1955–59).
