Sigiriya
Sigiriya
a rock mass on the island of Sri Lanka, 65 km south of Anuradhapura. The palace of the king Kassapa (fifth century) is perched on top of a cliff measuring 183 m high. At the king’s behest, frescoes were painted depicting young women with flowers and jewels, apparently engaged in a sacred ceremony. Today, 21 figures have been preserved. The scene is marked by a ceremonial and festive quality. The figures are filled with radiant beauty and grace; characterization is realistic, expressive, and individualistic.
