Artiukhina, Aleksandra

Born Oct. 25 (Nov. 6), 1889, in Vyshnii Volochek; died Apr. 7, 1969, in Moscow. Soviet Party and trade union figure; Hero of Socialist Labor (1960). Member of the Communist Party after 1910.

Artiukhina was born into the family of a weaver. Beginning at the age of 12, she worked in weaving factories. From 1908 on she worked in the textile workers’ union and the metalworkers’ union in St. Petersburg. She was subjected to arrest and exile several times. After 1917 she was engaged in government and Party work in Vyshnii Volochek, Tver, and other cities. In 1924 she became assistant director and later director of the Department of Women Workers and Peasants of the Central Committee of the RCP (Bolshevik). From 1924 to 1931 she was editor of the journal Rabotnitsa (Woman Worker). At the 13th congress of the RCP (Bolshevik) in 1924 she was chosen a candidate member of the Central Committee of the RCP (Bolshevik), and at the 14th (1925) and 15th (1927) congresses she was elected a member of the Central Committee of the ACP (Bolshevik). From 1926 to 1930 she was a member of the Orgbureau of the Central Committee of the ACP (Bolshevik) and a candidate for membership on the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the ACP (Bolshevik). At the 16th congress of the ACP (Bolshevik) in 1930 she was elected a member of the Central

Control Commission of the ACP (Bolshevik). In 1931–32 she worked on the Central Control Commission of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Inspection. From 1934 to 1938 she was president of the Central Committee of the cotton workers’ trade union. From 1938 to 1951 she was director of a number of textile mills in Moscow. After 1951 she was the recipient of a special pension. She was awarded three Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and also medals.
