unimolecular reaction[¦yü·nə·mə′lek·yə·lər rē′ak·shən] (physical chemistry) A chemical reaction involving only one molecular species as a reactant; for example, 2H2O → 2H2+ O2, as in the electrolytic dissociation of water. unimolecular reaction
mon·o·mo·lec·u·lar re·ac·tiona reaction involving a single molecule (for example, decomposition, intramolecular rearrangement, intramolecular oxidation or reduction), even if a catalytic agent, such as acid or alkali, is present in large excess, on a molecular basis, or is not rate-determining; such reactions are usually first-order reactions. Compare: molecularity. Synonym(s): unimolecular reaction |
