T’uchia

(self-designation, Pihsiehk’a), a people in China. The T’uchia, who live in Hunan and Hupeh provinces, number 549,000 (1953 census). Their origin is traced to peoples of the Ti-beto-Burman linguistic group. The T’uchia are highly sinicized and speak Chinese; they have retained only a few traits of their original culture. Their primary occupations are forestry (tung tree and tea) and the farming of rice, corn, and sweet potatoes.
