Valters, Janis
Valters, Jānis Teodorovich
(Ivan Fedorovich Valter). Born Jan. 22 (Feb. 3), 1869, in Jelgava; died Dec. 20, 1932, in Berlin. Latvian painter.
Valters studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1889-97) under A. D. Kivshenko and V. E. Makovskii. He worked in Jelgava (until 1906), Dresden (1906-17), and Berlin (from 1917). His early works consisted of acutely observant urban genre scenes, folk paintings (In the Marketplace [1897], Peasant Girl [c.1905], Orphan [1907]—all in the Art Museum of the Latvian SSR in Riga), and realistic landscapes. Subsequently Valters was influenced by expressionism.
