Valters studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1889-97) under A. D. Kivshenko and V. E. Makovskii. He worked in Jelgava (until 1906), Dresden (1906-17), and Berlin (from 1917). Subsequently Valters was influenced by expressionism.
