(roit`lĭng-ən), city (1994 pop. 107,607), Baden-Württemberg, SW Germany. Manufactures include textiles, paper, leather goods, iron, and machinery. Reutlingen was a free imperial city from the mid-13th cent. until it passed (1802–3) to Württemberg. In 1377 the Swabian League defeated Duke Ulrich of Württemberg there. Reutlingen was the first Swabian city to accept the Protestant Reformation (16th cent.). The Church of St. Mary (13th–14th cent.) is an outstanding example of late German Gothic architecture. The 19th-century economist Friedrich List was born in Reutlingen.
