plasma expander

Any substance used to increase the volume of the fluid component of circulating blood. The commonest plasma volume expander is donated human plasma obtained from anticoagulated whole blood. Other plasma expanders include dextran solution, fresh whole blood, and a range of electrolyte solutions.
